Colicin Typing of Shigella sonnei

Eleanor Christensen
Abstract
Colicin typing of Shigella sonnei was initially introduced in England by Abbott & Shannon(1958); the method depends on the production of various patterns of inhibition on a stock set of indicator or passive strains of other Shigellae and interest in the technique has increased rapidly in the last few years. The modifications of the reliability of colicin type as an epidemiological marker.
In this report, the colicin typing method for differentiating epidemic strains of Shigella sonnei was evaluated Colicin typing for the 927 cultures of Shigella sonnei isolated in Wisconsin State, U.S.A. during the period from 1973 to 1974 were carried out.
Seven hundred and fourteen cultures were untypable and 12 cultures were unclassifiable. But the method divides 23% of the strains into 15 established colicin types.
In the clicin typing of 19 cultures isolated in Korea during the period from 1972 to 1973. 19 cultures were unclassifiable but 16 cultures revealed same pattern of colicin production.
